When I started Kraken Technology Solutions, I thought I was building a technology company.
I wasn’t.
I was building a company around people.
The more time I spent speaking with business leaders, volunteering in our community, teaching, serving on local initiatives, and simply having conversations with people, the more I realized something that completely changed how I wanted Kraken to grow.
Community matters.
Not because it’s good for business.
Because it’s good for people.
And when we help people, we build better businesses.
Community Isn’t a Place
When most people hear the word community, they think of geography.
A city.
A county.
A neighborhood.
I don’t.
To me, community is built on relationships.
It’s built on shared purpose.
It’s built on helping people succeed.
It’s built on leaving the world better than we found it.
Community exists anywhere people choose to invest in one another.
Whether that’s here in Central Florida or with business leaders, educators, students, and innovators across the country, the principle is exactly the same.
When we help one another grow, we all become stronger.
Technology Has Never Been the Goal
People often think companies like ours are in the business of computers.
Servers.
Networks.
Cybersecurity.
Artificial Intelligence.
Cloud platforms.
Those things matter.
But they’ve never been the goal.
Technology exists to help businesses become better businesses.
Behind every technology decision is a person trying to accomplish something meaningful.
A business owner trying to provide for their family.
A teacher trying to prepare students for the future.
A nonprofit trying to serve more people.
An employee trying to do their job more effectively.
Technology is simply one of the tools that helps make those things possible.
If we forget the people behind the technology…
We’ve missed the point.
Growth Should Create Opportunity
I want Kraken to be successful.
I won’t pretend otherwise.
But success has never been about building the biggest technology company.
If Kraken becomes wildly successful, I hope that success creates opportunities.
Opportunities for my family.
Opportunities for our team.
Opportunities for the people who helped us along the way.
Opportunities for students entering the workforce.
Opportunities for local businesses trying to grow.
Because here’s something I’ve learned:
None of us gets where we’re going alone.
Every entrepreneur has someone who encouraged them.
Every business owner has someone who opened a door.
Every leader has someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves.
Success isn’t an individual accomplishment.
It’s the result of an entire community investing in one another.
Why We Choose to Invest
People occasionally ask why I spend so much time serving on community organizations, speaking at events, teaching, and working alongside local leaders.
The answer is simple.
Because I don’t just want to grow a company.
I want to help grow the people around it.
Organizations like the Winter Haven Tech Council, ConnectED Polk, Heart for Winter Haven, Polk State College, and the Winter Haven Chamber are helping shape the future of our region.
They’re creating opportunities.
Developing leaders.
Supporting students.
Strengthening businesses.
Connecting people who otherwise may never have met.
Being involved with organizations like these isn’t something I do outside of Kraken.
It’s part of why Kraken exists.
Because healthy communities create healthy businesses.
And healthy businesses create healthy communities.
The Return on Investment You Can’t Measure
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that many business leaders unintentionally begin to view their community as a collection of prospects.
Potential clients.
Potential sales.
Potential revenue.
I think that’s backwards.
Our communities are people.
People with dreams.
Challenges.
Families.
Businesses.
Students.
Ideas.
Our responsibility isn’t simply to grow because our community supports us.
Our responsibility is to give back to the community that helped make our success possible.
Will community involvement always produce measurable ROI?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
But I’ve come to believe the greatest return isn’t found on a financial statement.
It’s found in your heart.

Here’s something else I’ve learned.
If you spend time listening to your community, they’ll tell you exactly what they’re looking for.
Not through surveys.
Not through analytics.
Through conversations.
Spend time with business owners.
Talk with educators.
Listen to students.
Volunteer.
Attend events.
Support local organizations.
Buy someone coffee.
Ask questions.
You’ll quickly discover that leadership isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about caring enough to listen.
And when you truly understand your community…
Building a better business becomes much easier.
